Extended reality in green transition

The main goal of the course is to look into Virtual and Augmented Reality and investigate how this technology, together with the recent developments in AI and Robotics, support sustainability and green transition. The course starts with a brief overview of the concept of reality and virtuality and looks into some fundamentals of human perception and action. It explores, for example, how we build mental representations and why we perceive some artificially created experiences as real even when we know that they are fictional. We will also apply the concept of artificial sensory stimulation to other living organisms and look into experiments on virtual reality for other animals and even ants.

Industry and university in collaboration

logos-small

- Industry's green transition to a sustainable future requires knowledge of new, sustainable technologies and business models. In the Reedeam project, the industry and our three universities together create unique opportunities both for companies to train employees and to recruit students who have the core skills needed to succeed. We do this by ensuring that companies are constantly involved when we create the new courses and provide feedback on what works best. The universities contribute to the courses with researchers and teachers who have developed methods and theory based on needs arising from joint research projects.

Skills development
for industry's
climate transition

Together with 20 industrial companies, Luleå university of technology, Mälardalen university and Örebro university are co-producing courses to support industry’s climate transition. The five-year project is funded by the Knowledge Foundation. The aim is to strengthen the cooperation between universities and industry by improving access to needs-based education.

"Technology skills are crucial to enable industry's climate transition"

Serious skills shortage slows down climate transition

– Today, we have a serious situation where skills shortages contribute to slowing down the climate transition. Several reports show that many industries are having difficulty finding the right skills. We are now investing in deeper collaboration between academia, business and other actors to meet the many challenges in strategically important areas for the business sector’s transition,” says Eva Schelin, CEO of the Knowledge Foundation.

Thoughts on the Reedeam project

- Traditional industries are being transformed

The green and digital transitions mean we need to build new skills in industry and academia. Traditional industries are being transformed into new ways of doing business. Batteries and semiconductors are manufactured in an advanced and fast production system, and the whole value chain requires a different skill set from traditional European industry. Therefore, a transformation of the university sector is needed while industry is transformed and reborn. REEDEAM is a small and important step in this transformation.
